This is a capacity-building and rehabilitation project for discharged prisoners to enable them to reintegrate into communities of their choice. The project implementation which commenced in January 2010 has accomplished the following:
• Live fencing of 107 acre-land started.
• Mango plantation with initial 200 trees in place.
• A First three-bedroom house (for up to 15 residents at a time) is completed.
• A high-yield bore-hole with a submersible pump and associated electrical and plumbing works have been installed awaiting provision of a power to become operational. Further pipe-works are needed to irrigate part of the arable land for cultivation.
18 acres of land have been ploughed out of which 10 acres have already been planted with hybrid early-maturing coconut seedlings from the Bunso Agric Station. Six (6) acres are currently being planted with high-yielding mango seedlings, also from the same source. The rows in between these seedlings will be intercropped with seasonal vegetables.
The Akuse Prison will employ near-term inmates who have expressed interest in farming as their post-discharge occupation. In the meantime, local farm hands have been engaged in the cultivation since the Prisons authorities are yet to release inmates for such works due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We aim at sustaining and expanding this project for the next 2-3 years. All proceeds therefrom shall be retained for the home and the residents who will be employed on the project. Thus by the end of the resident’s term at the Home, we shall have ready funds to dispatch and launch them into civil society. We have so far invested GHS 24,640.00 on this project.
b. Solar power installation at Kasunya
Estimates for solar power installation amounting to GHS 40,000.00 and commercial water processing (GHS 170,000.00) at Kasunya project site have been received awaiting funding to be implemented. These two projects will make the site habitable and economically viable, and completely self-sustaining.
