One major surgical outreach involving successful hernia operations is held at Nsawam Main prison. A day’s programme of screening and treatment for common diseases is also held at James Camp through the instrumentality of our medical team. Given the availability of funding, our dedicated medical team could embark on an outreach each month. The Medical Team has submitted a requisition list of drugs, items and equipment (not cost estimates). The medical outreach to the Nsawam Infirmary for surgical operations (hernia) costs about GHS 8,000.00 (for each outreach) and this caters for between 16-20 patients at a time.
Also, a joint team of the Ministry’s Medical Team and the Welfare Unit of Ghana Prisons Service have carried out an assessment of the facilities at the Ankaful Prisons. While there is a well designed and constructed two-storey structure for a clinic at the Maximum Prison, no equipment, fittings and fixtures exist for the use of the structure as such. Apart from essential medical staff, there is therefore also an urgent need to equip the facility with both hardware and medical consumables.
